Forum: GratefulDead Subject: "First There Is A Mountain"

Someone who reads GD books told me that Donovan got the tune from the Dead, but I can't confirm that. Donovan doesn't mention it in his bio and, mentions only that the Dead met the Mahareshi in LA immediately after him. Donovan released "First There Is A Mountain" in September 1967 I think, so it make the Dead first theory unlikely.

There's shadow of something dancing around what I thought I heard in (Alligator>) Jam at around 4:50-6: minutes before a cut here:

People noticed it on 4/23/69e too, but only a short quote:

As far as I know it's Donavan's song, he wrote it. The theme was borrowed by the Dead and of course the Allmans legendary Mountain Jam.

Also of note his song Fat Angel pays homage to the Jefferson Airplane who must have liked that because they returned in kind to making that song a staple in their live shows ( sung by Kantner ).

The Alligator from 8/21/68 contains an unmistakable Mountain Jam theme. This entire show rages from start to finish...
